Mossimo Bikini Summit 2009
Okay, so it may have lost some air of exclusivity by holding the event in a mall and for free — after heavy rains in Boracay forced its cancellation last Saturday — but who cares. It’s the men in it that count. This is still the best grouping of men in a bikini competition so far this summer, or what remains of it. So go — Saturday, May 23, 8:00 p.m. at the Skydome, SM North EDSA.

Although rains came in early, the disruption in our weather patterns does not change the fact that the months of April and May remain to be the hottest months of the year - both literally and figuratively. During this season, bikini opens and summer modeling competitions abound; and as a regular organizer of summer events, Starmall, one of the bigger chain of malls in the country, comes up with the third run of its annual body competition - Heatwave Summer Bikini Showdown.
This year, the bikini competition which launched the careers of Harry Chuaand JC Dungo (of the Cappuccinos), features 14 young and gorgeous male hopefuls who would be vying to take home the grand prize and a bit of exposure for a possible acting career. The 14 male contestants of Heatwave Summer Bikini Showdown 2009 are: Russell Edge Ramos, Yco Mijarez, Nicos Bacani, Gamac Mendoza, Carlo Atienza, Rafael Morales, Oscar Ilada, Jr., Bullet Baldonado, Jay Barcelina, Alvin Orencia, Kevin Reyes, Julian Jerry Binarao, Henrick Salandanan and Dan Custodio.
The pre-pageant show for the first batch of contestants will be on May 13, 2009 at Cuba Libre Bar and Restaurant, 2nd Level of Starmall EDSA-Shaw at 7pm. The second batch of the contestants, meanwhile, will have their pre-pageant show at Cuba Libre Bar and Restaurant, 2nd Level of Starmall Las Pinas on May 15, 2009 at 7pm. The grand finals night of Heatwave 2009 will be held on May 29, 2009, 7pm at Starmall Alabang, along South Superhighway, Muntinlupa City. Admission to the pre-pageant shows and the grand finals night is FREE.
Thanks to Mr. Jeffrey Ventura, Corporate Marketing Officer for Starmall, for the pictures in this post.

There is a new indie film which dwells on media exploitation and sensationalism and this film is entitled “TUTOK”.
“TUTOK”is a dramatic thriller that revolves around the lives of two newsmen, one is an ambitious reporter (portrayed by award winnning actor Emilio Garcia) while the other is a cameraman (played by actor turned producer Allen Dizon). Together, the two men seek instant fame by attempting to cover a story involving rebel leaders. What follows next is a series of events that makes the lives of the two men turn into a nightmare. The two men are forced to participate in homosexual acts and sexual orgies while being filmed by a camera. “Tutok” comprises a good cast which includes Boots Anson-Roa as the concerned mother, Andrea Del Rosario as the reporter’s understanding wife, Lloyd Samartino as the feisty television head news executive, Victor Aliwalas as a news correspondent and Ian De Leon as the rebel leader. The film also features newcomer Raymond Cabralas one of the rebels who engage in homosexual activities.

“Tutok” is indeed a worthy follow up to award-wining actors Emilio Garcia who recently triumphed with acting awards through his engaging performances in “Selda” and “Walang Kawala” and Allen Dizon, after his acclaimed performances in “Twilight Dancer” and “Paupahan”. The film is about what men are willing to do for fame and the price one has to pay for it. “Tutok” opens in selected Metro Manila theaters on May 27. Watch out for it as it promises to be very controversial. Photo’s and Article Contributed by: Leo Dominguez

The Bikini Open 2009 Night last weekend was one of the better-produced shows from Dolores Tropicana Resort which I have witnessed. Again directed by Al-Nehzar Ali with a theme invoking images of the Orient, the whole thing was a visual delight.
The program was also a paean of sorts to Bikini Open’s legacy since it is now on it’s 10th year having started in 1999 when Bariles was still Marketing Officer of Nation Broadcasting Corporation’s Anna@Rhythms 97.5 FM, its media partner and co-presenter then. At that time, now VP for Dolores Resorts and Hotels Teresa “Tata” Mondido was still part of RD Hospitality Group’s Marketing Department.
Anyway, a short opening sequence featured a video presentation of the past decades’ Bikini Babes and Hunks which am sure made everyone from the staff of Dolores Hotels feel nostalgic. What Bariles noticed though was that through the years, the swimsuits of the ladies became more and more conservative. This could be due to the GAD Code (Gender and Development) being passed and implemented by the city government which prohibits very skimpy attires for candidates of any beauty pageant.

Past winners of the Bikini Open: Bikini Hunk 2007, Bikini Babe 2008, Bikini Hunk 1st runner-up 2008, Bikini Hunk 2008
This year’s event also heralds Dolores Tropicana Resort’s expansion plans, according to Ms. Tata. On the pipeline is a two-storey building at the vacant portion of its hotel cottages which will add 30 or more rooms to its existing 35 rooms (all equipped with satellite TV and wi-fi connections).
Sharing jury duties for the 10th Bikini Open along with Bariles were Oliver “Blogie” Robillo, Dr. James Haw and Ms. Jocelyn Enriquez of Emcor, who all had a grand time selecting from the 10 Bikini Babes (most of whom where of the shorter variety this year) and 10 Bikini Hunks (who were much better-bodied than last year’s batch).
Below are some of the shots taken by Bariles Republic resident fotog Marzz, Davao photoblogger Chattee Lara, problogger Lyle Santos, and award-winning fotog Leonard Pe.

The evening opened with the performance of this much-applauded Fire Dancer.
